MAIS Folklore Alumna Making Her Mark

Davenport operates folkstreams.net, a video-streaming site dedicated to preserving folk stories. Because of his ties to the folk community, he knew that George Mason University has a folklore masters degree program. He contacted the department in search of a student who might want to take on the orchard problem as a thesis project. In order to understand why the immigrant communities are drawn to Fauquier’s orchards, Stryker began by researching the history of the county’s orchards. She found that orchards once covered Marshall, Delaplane and Markham during colonial times. “It is unusual to have so many pick-your-own orchards in the same vicinity,” said Stryker during a presentation to the Leeds Ruritan Club last week.
