Section Information for Spring 2017
This course offers an introduction to Western history. It is concerned with how the "West" and "modernity" came to be defined. We will consider what visual and material culture can tell us about people, history, and culture; and whether what we learn will ask us to reconsider what we know. We will ask what are the possibilities—and the limits—of this kind of evidence for understanding history and culture. We will ask how text-based and material-based inquiries might support one another.
