Section Information for Spring 2017
This colloquium will offer a graduate-level survey of the major fields of academic Art History, team-taught by the Art History faculty and mediated by the professor of record. The weekly lectures will introduce the main issues, local resources, historiography and pedagogy of each of our fields, supplemented by group discussions with the faculty and focused readings. The course will help prepare students for further graduate coursework, for their MA comprehensive exams, and for possible future teaching or museum work. Coursework will include weekly reading summaries and local exhibition critiques. At the end of the course, students will take the slide portion of their required MA comprehensive exams. Admission to this course will be restricted to Art History graduate students, because of the focus on the MA comprehensive exam. It is to be taken by all first-year graduate students in the GMU MA program, and by others in consultation with the MA advisor, Prof. DeCaroli. Students should acquire a major Art History survey textbook such as Stokstad, Gardner or Janson. Stokstad's Art History (4th ed.) will the one made available at the Bookstore and followed by most of the lecturers.
