Requirements

Please note: Our curriculum requirements are changing, beginning with catalog year Fall 2023. You can contact MAIS staff at mais@gmu.edu if you have questions!

Old Requirements for Students in Catalog Years prior to Fall 2023

While every Interdisciplinary Studies concentration involves different degree paths, all students must meet the following requirements in order to finish their degrees:

  1. MAIS 696/796: Proseminar (1 credit), taken in the first 2 semesters or 9 credits.
  2. MAIS 793: Integrated Learning Experience (formerly called MAIS 797: Proposal Writing ): 1-credit course, taken after completion of 18 credits and a research methods course (if required).
  3. capstone research project or thesis (1 credit of MAIS 798: Project or 4 credits of MAIS 799: Thesis).

NEW Requirements for Students in Catalog Years Fall 2023 and later

While every Interdisciplinary Studies concentration involves different degree paths, all students must meet the following requirements in order to finish their degrees:

  1. Complete an online orientation module by the start of the first semester
  2. MAIS 793: Integrated Learning Experience - A 3-credit course, taken after completion of 18 credits and a research methods course (if required).
  3. capstone research project or thesis  - 3 credits of MAIS 798: Project or  MAIS 799: Thesis.  This may be optional or required depending on the concentration.
