This 36 hour Master's Degree with a Community College Teaching Concentration (Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies - CCT) combines 12 hours of college teaching courses (including coursework required for the Certificate in College Teaching), with 21 hours of work in one of the following knowledge areas: information systems , English, mathematics, Spanish or TESL.

This concentration qualifies students to teach entry-level courses in these growing fields at the two-year college level. In addition, the MAIS program offers an appropriate graduate degree for some faculty currently teaching in community colleges.

admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling GMU admission requirements for graduate study, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in the knowledge area or a closely related knowledge area. Applicants for admission must submit the following:

  • three letters of reference
  • 1,000 word analytical writing sample (English knowledge area applicants - sample of literary critical analysis)
  • resume
  • communication, information systems, math, and psychology concentrations require GRE or MAT scores

Applications will be reviewed by faculty in the Higher Education program and by faculty in the knowledge area. Once accepted, a student will be assigned a faculty advisor from Higher Education Program and an advisor from the knowledge area.

degree requirements

In addition to meeting all graduate study requirements listed in the GMU catalog, candidates for the MAIS - Community College Teaching Degree will complete 36 credits hours of graduate work, distributed as follows: 12 hours of college teaching courses (including coursework required for the Certificate in College Teaching), and 21 hours of work in one of the following knowledge areas: information systems , English, mathematics, Spanish or TESL.

College Teaching (CTCH) Requirements (12 hrs)

All students will take:

  • CTCH 601: The Community College
  • CTCH 602: College Teaching
  • CTCH 603: Teaching with Technology
  • CTCH 885: Internship in Community College Teaching*
  • All students are required to take: 1 credit - MAIS 797 (Proposal Writing) and 2 credits -MAIS 798 (Project)*   (approval of MAIS proposal required; register by emailing: mais@gmu.edu)

Knowledge Area Requirements (21 hrs)

Students in Communication will take:

  • COMM 653
  • COMM 650
  • COMM 602 (or COMM 634)
  • COMM 635 (or COMM 605)
  • three additional graduate level communication courses (including any listed above beyond requirement), chosen in consultation with an advisor

Students in Information Systems will take:

  • INFS 515: Computer Organization
  • INFS 590: Program Design and Data Structures
  • INFS 612: Principles and Practices of Communication Networks
  • INFS 614: Database Management
  • 9 additional elective credits chosen from the following courses with approval of an advisor: INFS 622: Information Systems Analysis and Design, INFS 623: Classical and Web Information Retrieval, INFS 640: Introduction to Electronic Commerce, ISA 662: Information Systems Security, ISA 666: Internet Security Protocols

  • ENGL 701: Literary Scholarship
  • ENGL 610: Proseminar in Teaching and the Reading of Literature or*
  • ENGL 615: Proseminar in Composition Instruction
  • additional courses in English chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor

*Students may take ENGL 610 or ENGL 615, or both.

  • SPAN 505: Applied Spanish Stylistics
  • SPAN 510: Introduction to the Graduate Study of Literature in Spanish
  • 12 additional hours of graduate level courses (9 hours must be in designated Spanish courses of which 3 may be in a graduate course designated Foreign Languages)

  • LING 520: Descriptive Linguistics
  • LING 521*: Applied Linguistics: Teaching English as a Second Language
  • LING 522: Modern English Grammar
  • LING 523: Descriptive Aspects of English Phonetics and Phonology
  • LING 525: Practicum
  • LING 582: Second Language Acquisition
  • An additional elective chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor.

    *LING507 may be substituted for LING521.

Credits that apply to the MAIS - CCT degree are subject to the following restrictions:

  • A maximum of 6 credits earned through independent study or directed readings and research courses
  • A maximum of 6 credits taken through the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area (These credits are counted as resident and not transfer credit.)
  • A maximum of 15 transfer credits (All transfer credits require the approval of the faculty advisor, the director of the MAIS program, and the dean. Transfer credits are any credits taken before first enrolling as an admitted degree-seeking student, whether taken at another institution, taken in another George Mason University graduate program, or completed through George Mason University's Extended Studies Program.)
  • Of the 15 possible transfer credits, a maximum of 6 may be from other accredited institutions.
  • GMU graduate policy requires that 18 resident credit hours be completed while in degree status.
