Women & Gender Studies Alumna Will Pursue PhD This Fall

Sara Haq, who graduated in 2012 with an MAIS degree in Women and Gender Studies, has recently been accepted into the University of Maryland's Women's Studies doctoral program for Fall 2013. Additionally, Dr. Layli Maparyan, who was a keynote speaker at the 2012 Southeastern Women's Studies Association conference, hosted by Women and Gender Studies, has invited Sara to write a chapter in her next volume.

Sara's MAIS thesis, which focused on using themes of liminality in Islamic thought to question the gender binary, was guided by Dr. Maria Dakake, a professor in the Religious Studies Department and an affiliate of Women and Gender Studies. At Maryland, Sara will continue to build on her research, but re-frame it to use themes of liminality in Islamic thought to question the institution of marriage. Sara is very excited about the prospect of taking pedagogy classes and learning Persian. Her record of accomplishment at Mason has helped her to gain full funding for her PhD studies at Maryland. Sara is extremely grateful for the experience she received while in the MAIS program in Women and Gender Studies. Sara is available to share her experiences with other students who may have similar ambitions.

Anyone who is interested should write to wmst@gmu.edu. Congratulations, Sara!
