Announcing the Immigrant Stories Project

The Institute for Immigration Research (IIR) is proud to announce our latest achievement – the Immigrant Stories Project. This web publication aims to provide essential information regarding immigrant populations in the Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland metro areas by combining data and personal stories. Currently, the page includes stories and data on immigrants from Korea, India, and Bolivia. Additional countries of origin will be included in the future.

The project provides 1) fact sheets about immigrants’ contributions to the Washington, DC and Baltimore metropolitan areas; 2) interviews conducted with immigrants regarding their experiences living in the region, and 3) a statistical analysis for each immigrant group. This mixed methods approach provides a more comprehensive picture, allowing our audience to obtain a broader view of immigrants’ vital economic and societal contributions to the metro area and to the United States as a whole.

Dr. Dae Young Kim, Associate Professor and Director of the Undergraduate Program in Sociology at George Mason University, and his students have made a major contribution to this project. As part of a class project on race, ethnicity, and immigration, students conducted in-depth interviews with immigrants in the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan region.
