Mason Launches Master's Degree in Social Justice and Human Rights

This fall, students can begin their studies in an interdisciplinary master’s degree (MAIS) in Social Justice and Human Rights. Joining the current Integrative Studies concentration in Social Justice and Human Rights and the minor in Social Justice, this MAIS degree expands on Mason’s commitment to prepare the next generation of social justice advocates and change agents.

The MAIS in Social Justice and Human Rights is designed to cultivate a deep theoretical understanding of the social, political, cultural, historical, and economic implications of a wide array of social injustices and human rights issues. Students are engaged in the applied process of imagining and actualizing holistic and complex strategies for creating and sustaining a more equitable, just, and humane world.

Students will have the opportunity to address these complex topics through a variety of courses reaching across traditional disciplinary boundaries and through experiential learning designed to build upon classroom studies and create deep engagement in the field. After a core course covering contemporary issues in social justice and human rights, students will explore such topics as racial justice, environmental justice, disability rights, women’s rights, and economic justice.
