Dr. Yolanda Barbier Gibson serves as the Associate Dean of First Year Experience at Marymount University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Business Administration from Marymount University, Master of Arts in College Teaching, and a Doctor of Arts in Higher Education Administration from George Mason University. As a first- generation college graduate and Haitian American, she is committed and passionate about helping college students, parents, and perspective students understand the college process. Throughout her academic career, she has conducted research on student access and retention particularly among underrepresented populations as well as presented workshops on the college search process, and understanding the financial implications of obtaining a four-year degree. She is also the faculty advisor to the Black Student Alliance. Gibson’s broad expertise spans strategic planning, assessment, student recruitment, student advisement, service learning, teaching, volunteer management, fundraising, and working with diverse constituencies.
Gibson is a member of the National Academic Advising Association, National Communication Association, American Association of University Women, and a member of the American Council on Education Leadership Fellows 2018-2019 class. Dr. Barbier Gibson obtained the following honors CHSS Dissertation of the Year Award (2015), Alumni Club Leadership Award (2008), and Virginia Community College System Classified Staff Leadership Award (2007).
Outside of work and serving the community she is the wife of James Gibson and a proud mother of two daughters.
